Above-normal significant fire potential” for Oregon forests this summer is forecasted by the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise.  Significant fire potential is the likelihood that large forest wildfires could readily ignite, rapidly spread, and demand extraordinary firefighting effort and cost.

Be Fire-Safe in 2025! Forest contractors are encouraged to plan for a safe and fire-free season!  Contractor diligence should deploy fire precautions on every jobsite, throughout the summer— while also paying attention to unexpected dry days before and after declared fire season.

The proceeds from the tournament will go to the three Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) hospitals in Oregon. Associated Oregon Loggers expresses deep concern over the sudden January 9 announced resignation of State Forester, Cal Mukumoto, a decision driven by undue political pressure.  Mukumoto’s resignation for the helm of Oregon’s Department of Forestry is effective Jan. 23.

His departure comes amid heightened public scrutiny created by a campaign of coordinated media and legislative criticism, focusing on ODF personnel investigations, fire funding, and administrative matters unrelated to forestry. These distractions overshadowed the vital work of managing Oregon's forests and forest resource policy.

This resignation underscores a concerning trend that highlights the challenges of navigating agency leadership in a highly-politicized Democratic run state government.

This decision, which marks a victory for science-based forest management, has spurred significant media engagement.

AOL's release led to a January 10 interview on The Wake Up Call on KPNW radio in Eugene and ongoing collaboration with The New Era in Sweet Home for an Op-ed. Additionally, AOL is engaging with several digital media editors to amplify this important message.

The Northwest is in for a mild winter, near-normal, with overall below-average precipitation, above-average temperature, and with cold blasts possible— predicts meteorologist Art Douglas November 17.  He predicts the wet La Niña forecast will likely end in December or January, then return to average before becoming warmer and wetter in the spring through May.
 
The National Weather Service on Nov. 14 predicted just a 57% chance the current La Niña pattern would continue thru the winter for Oregon and Washington.  A La Niña winter in the northern US is colder and wetter than normal.  “It might just be neutral this year,” said Oregon State Climatologist Larry O'Neill.

  • Trifecta federal majority: Business-minded Republicans gained a rare lawmaking majority in US Senate, House and Executive—a trifecta in federal government on Capitol Hill. Republicans gained a new tight majority in the Senate. While the US House vote tally is incomplete at press-time, analysts now predict that Republicans will keep their narrow House majority. That doesn’t mean “control” of government. Rather, we can expect continued internal strife in the close-majority House and Senate GOP conference; however, with new incentive for Republicans to get on the same page and pass good law.
  • President Trump 47: In a national landslide victory of the US electoral college, Trump returns as the 47th president in January. Trump’s nationwide movement made history as only the second President to serve two inconsecutive terms. Although Oregonians did not help this win, Trump’s Oregon vote gained in every election: 42% in 2024, 40% in 2020, and 39% in 2016.
  • Measure 118, $2 billion dollar tax failed. This destructive and inflationary Oregon tax on society got an 80% “no” vote.
  • Measure 117, rank-choice voting flopped: The wrong-headed vote scheme failed by a margin of nearly 20%.

    Co-produced by AOL—‘Timber’ is a positive show & tell about planting, growing and harvesting timber.  Oregon loggers and foresters tell the story, with video of AOL member operations and your people working in the forest.

    Four shotgun squads took aim on a beautiful Saturday August 3rd, initiated a new AOL tradition for members supporting their State Political Action Committee.  AOL shooting players were hosted by Mid-Valley Clays, located near Gervais. 
     
    Each player received 100 target shots, 15 stations, all ammo, lunch and fun!

Do you live on acreage or maybe even own a small woodland of your own?  If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then this event is for you!  Tree School Umpqua is coming to Roseburg on Saturday, September 28th and features 24 classes covering a wide variety of forestry-related topics (and 21 are available to earn you OPL continuing education credits!).  Topics include forest management, reforestation, fire, wildlife, ecology, and more.

    ]]>     Fri, 2 Aug 2024 05:00:00 GMT     Truckers Sue State to Reduce Weight-Mile Tax https://oregonloggers.org/news/news.asp?id=667150 https://oregonloggers.org/news/news.asp?id=667150 On January 30, Oregon Trucking Association (OTA) filed a lawsuit in Douglas County Circuit Court, contesting years of the state overcharging commercial motor carriers under the weight-mile and fuel taxes.  Challenging the Democratic majority leadership is a necessary step for OTA and Oregon’s commercial trucking industry.

    For at least the past six years, heavy trucks have paid an increasing and disproportionate share of Oregon’s road taxes, breaching the mandate from the Oregon Constitution.  

    • AOL staff joined OTA in testimony given at the Oregon Joint Transportation Committee hearing, February 20, supporting legislative efforts to rebalance the weight-mile tax burden disparity between heavy and light vehicles.
    • AOL is an associate member of OTA; and we support OTA’s fight to rebalance truck taxation.  We’ll keep you updated.
