On 5/16/22, the Board of Forestry held a special meeting which included a discussion about the Emergency Fire Fund Legislative Concept that ODF has been developing with an advisory group of landowners and conservation groups.
Public testimony was given by some on and off the advisory group, but one this was clear... ODF surprised the group by assessing a larger average fire cost ($61 Million) than was agreed to by the advisory group which would be split by landowners and the General Fund.
The Board of Forestry did vote to move forward with the draft concept, but only with the caveat that there is more work to be done on the concept and with the recognition that this may not be the long term fix everyone was hoping it could be.
