Stewarding Oregon's Forests

Loggers are the forestry profession’s connection to the forest, the on-the-ground specialists who maintain forests, improve forest health, sustainably harvest timber and steward our forested ecosystems. Continuous technology improvement in forest logging operation methods has improved safety, productivity, environmental protection and fiber utilization over the years which has led to better ecosystem and social outcomes throughout Oregon.

There are three main categories of logging: ground-based, cable and helicopter. All of these logging techniques require special skills, equipment and knowledge to be successful and are used in different situations.

Ground Based Logging

Where the slope and soil conditions in a logging unit are capable of handling heavy equipment, a ground based operation is typically utilized because it is safe, effective and efficient. The technique requires as little as two main pieces of equipment, operated by two loggers.

Cable Logging

When a logging unit is too steep for traditional ground based equipment, a cable system is often utilized. This system requires a whole crew of loggers doing different jobs. Trees must first be hand felled and then a tower is used that pulls a carriage on a cable high above the ground to carry the log to the landing.

Helicopter Logging

Where a logging unit is very steep and there is no available road or landing location nearby, a helicopter may be used to get the logs from the unit to the landing for processing and hauling to the mill. This is the most costly logging technique and is only used when absolutely necessary.
