Creating New Opportunities for Adventure

Professionals in roading connect people with our forests. Forest roads allow people to access the woods for recreation, complete forest health treatments, plant and harvest trees, fight wildfires, monitor wildlife and much more. A well-maintained road network is vital to participate in these activities and revenue generated from logging activities allows our forest roads to be kept in great shape where they are not contributing to sedimentation and erosion.

Forest road access is the most important attribute to multiple-use management of sustainable forest resources.  As such, forest landowners, managers and operators make special attention to road investments in professional construction and maintenance.

There are four main categories of roading jobs: new construction, reconstruction, maintenance as well as activities associated with that extract, crush and transport aggregate materials used in the construction and maintenance of roads.

New Road Construction

When a new road must be built to access forest management operations or new recreational opportunities, an engineer determines where the road should be placed, designed, and how it is constructed for the intended use, current standards, maintenance, and investment service life. Experienced road builders aid in construction and hydrologic designs to assure the road durability is optimized and environmental effects are reduced.

Road Reconstruction

When an existing road has been unused in many years, it may need to be remodeled, or “reconstructed,” in-order to upgrade its condition for current uses. Reconstruction also brings an aging road into compliance with current standards of design, safety, and environmental protection.

 Road Maintenance

Forest roads are periodically monitored and maintained to ensure their safe and stable condition for the planned use and timing for each segment.  Oregon forest regulations require maintenance standards for different road uses and situations.  Forest roads serve many purposes, and have diverse owner objectives, including public recreation, forest protection, or management operations.  Each use and purpose may demand a unique set of maintenance activities. During active forest management operations or recreation travel, maintenance frequency increases to accomplish safe use while protecting the watershed and road investment.  A smooth and stable road surface is created by a forest road maintenance professional.

Rock Crushing And Hauling

In order to build and maintain sustainable road access to the forest, rock, aggregate, and other substrate is manufactured and delivered to road locations. Forest road rock products are customarily sourced from nearby forest quarries, crushed and screened into usable sizes, and then hauled to project sites for their installation onto the roadway.
