Firefighter Fatalities - Important Safety Message from AOL

Saturday, August 20, 2022   (0 Comments)

As we are coming to the end of August, the 2022 fire season in Oregon has been a challenging one. AOL was recently notified of a wildland firefighter fatality in Southern Oregon. Early official reports note that the incident was due to being struck by a tree, making it the second wildland firefighter fatality in Oregon this year from the same cause.

As many of our members are actively involved in the firefighting effort across Oregon’s landscape, we wanted to take this time to keep you informed of the accidents that have occurred in an effort to prevent them. As firefighters, we have tools that we can use to help keep us safe on the fire line, such as: LCES18 Watchout Situations, and the 10 Standard Fire Orders. We have these tools to help us be as safe as possible, but the hazards of wildland fire fighting never get to zero.

We need to remain diligent and keep our situational awareness of the ever-changing wildland fire environment to help keep us safe. Fire seasons are an endurance race, try to keep your rest, stay hydrated, and stay informed.

If you would like any specific information, safety materials or requests for fire information materials, please reach out to David Grim, AOL Safety and Health Manager directly at dgrim@oregonloggers.org, and by cell 503-930-4031.
