Reporting Your Location in an Emergency

Friday, April 21, 2023   (0 Comments)

Did you know that there are different types of GPS coordinates? In fact, there are three main types used in a variety of applications, they are:

  • DMS
  • DDM
  • DD

We recently received a question on the type of GPS coordinates that would be best for relay to emergency responders for aerial rescue, such as: Life Flight, Reach or the US Coast Guard.

So, we reached out to aerial responders to get your question answered. The USCG and Reach each said that DMS is the type of coordinates used in their helicopters.

If your crew is using a different type of coordinate other than DMS it’s a good practice to make sure that your crew understands which type you’re using and that they can relay that to the dispatcher when giving the coordinates. This will prevent any confusion and ensure an accurate response with the medical team.
