Here are some important pieces to have in place on your jobsite.
When heat index is 80 or above: - Heat Illness Prevention Plan is in place and communicated.
- Emergency Medical Plan accounts for heat illnesses and excessive heat exposure.
- All employees are trained yearly in the Heat Illness Prevention Plan
- Shade areas have been made readily accessible and available for use during breaks.
- Drinking water temperature is cool/cold.
- Enough drinking water for 32oz. per employee, per hour.
When heat index is 90 or above: Rest break schedule is established and in practice. o Example: 10 minute break every 2 hours worked (90-99 heat index) o Example: 30 minute break every 1 hour worked (100 heat index +) Heat Index (°F) | Rest break durations and intervals | 90 or greater | 10 minutes every two hours | 95 or greater | 20 minutes every hour | 100 or greater | 30 minutes every hour | 105 or greater | 40 minutes every hour |
Acclimatization Plan is established and in practice, gradually increasing workloads over a period of days. o Example: 20% of normal work load on day one, increasing by 20% on each additional day. For new workers. * o Day 1, working at 20% capacity/work load o Day 2, working at 40% capacity/work load o Day 3, working at 60% capacity/work load o Day 4, working at 80% capacity/work load o Day 5, working at 100% capacity/work load
