July 4th Travel Safety Tips

Friday, June 30, 2023   (0 Comments)

This Fourth of July holiday, whether you are headed to the beach, camping, visiting family, headed out for the rodeo, or even to work, remember the highways will be filled with people doing the same. No matter what your plans are, you can plan on a rise in the number of cars on Oregon’s highways.

AOL would like to help ensure that you travel safe. To help with that, here are a few simple tips from the Oregon State Police to help ensure that you arrive at your destination over the holiday.

  • Plan ahead, be prepared, and be patient.
  • Timing your departure can make all the difference. Give yourself plenty of time to account for heavy traffic, which can mean long delays.
  • Know your routes and options if you come across a detour or construction. Check ODOT’s tripcheck.com for traffic cameras, highway construction, and road closures.
  • Ensure your vehicle is properly equipped and in good working order to avoid maintenance emergencies.
  • Keep your attention on the road when traveling with children by ensuring that they have plenty of games and snacks to help keep them occupied.

Police agencies across the State will be helping to enforce the Fatal 5, the 5 major categories of driving behaviors that contribute to most fatal or serious injury:

  1. Speed
  2. Occupant Safety
  3. Lane Safety
  4. Impaired Driving
  5. Distracted Driving
