We have reports from partner fire associations that industrial fires are on the rise this summer, particularly from active logging sites. Wildland fuels are only going to get dryer, here are some points to consider out on your operation:
Ensure that fire equipment has been inspected, well-stocked, and in good working order!
Be sure to check for hoses, nozzles, hand tools, and start pumps on a regular basis.
Have the crew regularly connect a hose up and spray some water out of the lines.
Park all vehicles and equipment in an area free from dry grass and brush.
Be sure to check those that are coming on to your jobsite also park their vehicles in a cleared area.
Walk equipment out of the brush to a slash-free road, prior to shutting down for the day.
Park vehicles facing-out for quick egress in the event of a fire.
Parking vehicles facing-out is a good practice, all year long. Vehicles can be delayed getting turned around, or worse, stuck and blocking everyone’s escape route.
When possible, log downed trees before slash has a chance to become tinder dry.
This way you are not working in and around dried slash and brush.
When was the last time you replaced the water in the fire tank?
Keeping fresh water can help ensure that fire nozzles and pumps will not get clogged with tank debris.
