Do not delay in getting all record keeping, training and documentation in order—concerning OR-OSHA required employee safety and health compliance. Documentation compliance has been a source of employer citations.
The change to OR-OSHA higher fine structure for all Oregon employers has been in effect since January 2024.
For the top-25 violations, OR-OSHA has issued almost three times the penalty dollar total, during the first six months of 2024 – as compared to the 2023 full-year penalty total. OR-OSHA issued $4.4 million in penalties in 2024’s first six months for the top-25 violations; compared to $1.7 million in fines for 2023’s top-25.
These penalty increases mandated by Oregon’s Legislature (SB 592) temporarily align Oregon OSHA with Federal OSHA's 2023 penalty schedule.
Oregon OSHA will need to annually adjust its penalty rates, based on changes in the Western Region Consumer Price Index (CPI-WR). The Federal OSHA annually adjusts its penalties by the national Consumer Price Index for Urban Consumers (CPI-U).
